As A Designer: It Doesn’t Matter What I Think

Really. I’m awful. I’m designing some of the setup pages for one of our apps, SignBase and the objective is to get them through this process, extracting as much information with the minimum amount of fuss. If anything’s in the wrong place or un-natural – BYE BYE. If something doesn’t work first time – BYE BYE It has to be spot on. It’s the one part of your process you can’t have wrong. The bit where you are saying “hi” to people. This is what the page looked like when I’d finished: To me, it looked cooler having the nextRead the rest of this story…

I’ve had an interesting day…

Written Sunday 4th September I Woke up this morning with the intention of doing absolutely nothing. Good start for a Sunday. Thought to myself that I’d written 5 months worth of auto-responder content for our business automation service, it’s a crime for me not to be giving that to people who sign up to the Advantix email list. So I took a 40 page word doc of random nonsense that I wrote in Berlin and copied it into some seriously cool looking emails. Go to www.advantixgroup.com/start to see them. I listened to a webinar with some internet marketing bloke calledRead the rest of this story…

Designing A New Site: Part 1

Every now and then a website needs a new design. I’m sure we all agree on this but what frustrates me is when people change the design for the sake of it. I understand the thinking – It’s the same reason you change you’d move furniture around in the living room or give something a fresh coat of paint. You’ve got bored with it. I want to show you some behind the scenes as to some of the decisions we made when designing the new marketing site for the EasySite. Something New Sabrina and I agreed that we had seenRead the rest of this story…

Is It Done… Or Finished?

In our world of creating an online experience for users of our apps, it’s important to realise the difference between something being “done” and being “finished”. When I think about something being done, I think about all the building blocks being produced and put in the right places. Sure, all the components might be completed and your to-do list for the project might be done, but the question remains, is it finished? When I think of something being finished, I think of a craftsman making a table. It has a top, and legs, it stands up and structurally, it’s done…Read the rest of this story…

You’re A Virgin. I’ll Look After You

It’s important to look after virgins. Of your product’s that is. What did you think I was talking about? We’re in the process of putting the finishing touches on AddBook. It’s our customer database that’ll organise your business. It’s easy for us to know what to put where, and the difference between a “company” and a “person”, but the first time user who created an account 3 minutes ago has no friggin’ clue! Welcome “Empty Page Includes”. Have you ever gone to a piece of software, or a website and it says “You don’t have any items currently, click hereRead the rest of this story…

What’s A Web Browser?

A web browser is, “the internet”, as some people call it… other people call it the “big blue e”. This poses a problem to us as web developers. Here’s the short back-story. Microsoft back in the late nineties decided it would be a fun idea (as the company behind Internet Explorer) to be lazy in building it, and not keep up with web standards. The web evolved, but IE didn’t.Every time we build an app, or a website we’re forced to do all these crazy checks to make sure something works in IE. The trouble is, is means we can’tRead the rest of this story…
